An Anonymous Stranger Donated a Kidney to Save My Life—One Year Later, I Married Him. Fifteen Minutes After We Said "I Do," He Revealed the Secret He Had Never Told Me.

A year before our wedding, I thought the greatest miracle that would ever happen to me was receiving a kidney from a man I barely knew.

I was wrong.

Because one year later, I married that man.

And less than fifteen minutes after we became husband and wife, Ethan leaned close and whispered,

"Claire, there's something I should have told you long before today."

What I didn't know then was that the man who had given me a part of his body to save my life had also hidden an entire part of his own.

I was thirty-one when my kidneys suddenly began to fail.

Before that, I had been healthy enough to believe hospitals were places other people went.

Then my life became blood tests.

Dialysis.

Medication alarms.

Special diets.

Appointments.

I learned which nurse always worked the night shift.

Which dialysis chair hurt my back the least.

And which waiting room had the worst coffee.

Every week, I found myself thinking the same thing.

Maybe this is just my life now.

My entire family got tested.

Mom held my hand while the transplant coordinator explained compatibility.

My brother even joked,

"My kidneys are premium quality. I'm definitely a match."

We laughed.

But when the results came back...

Not one of them matched.

I pretended I was okay.

I wasn't.

Two months later, my doctor walked over while I was in dialysis.

There was something different about the expression on his face.

"Claire, we may have a potential living donor."

I thought I'd misheard him.

"What?"

"A volunteer."

"Who?"

He glanced down at the chart.

"Ethan."

The name meant nothing to me.

"Ethan... who?"

He told me his last name.

Still nothing.

I laughed, because if I didn't, I was afraid I would cry.

"A complete stranger wants to donate a kidney to me?"

"It appears so."

"I don't understand."

"Why would anyone do that?"

He gave me a careful smile.

"You can ask him yourself."

May you like

Three days later...

I did.
