Put a roll of toilet paper in the fridge. Here’s why
In the realm of home hacks and quirky tips, placing a roll of toilet paper in the fridge might sound like a bizarre suggestion. However, this unusual practice has been gaining traction among individuals looking to maintain a fresh and odor-free refrigerator environment. While it might seem unconventional, this simple household item could be the answer to a cleaner and more pleasant-smelling fridge.
As people constantly search for affordable, practical solutions to everyday problems, the toilet paper fridge hack has piqued the interest of many. It is touted as a low-cost alternative to commercial deodorizers and moisture absorbers, making it an attractive option for those looking to reduce their household expenses while maintaining a clean home.
1. The Surprising Science Behind Toilet Paper in the Fridge
The concept of placing toilet paper in the fridge is rooted in its natural absorbent properties. Toilet paper is designed to be highly absorbent, with a matrix of fibers that can effectively capture and hold moisture. This is crucial in a refrigerator setting, where excess moisture can lead to mold and bacterial growth, negatively affecting the freshness of your food.
When placed in the fridge, a roll of toilet paper can absorb some of the humidity present, helping to maintain an ideal moisture balance within the appliance. It is estimated that a single roll can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture, depending on the brand and ply thickness. This reduction in humidity not only helps to preserve perishables but also minimizes the chances of unpleasant odors developing.
2. How Chilled Toilet Paper Helps Absorb Odors
Toilet paper’s ability to absorb odors in the fridge is largely due to its porous nature. As it absorbs moisture, it simultaneously traps odor-causing particles, preventing them from circulating throughout the fridge. This can be especially beneficial for households that store potent-smelling foods like onions, garlic, or certain cheeses.
While toilet paper may not completely eliminate all odors, it can significantly reduce them, providing a more neutral scent environment. The effectiveness of odor absorption will vary based on the size of the fridge and the extent of the odors present. However, for minor odor issues, toilet paper can serve as an efficient and inexpensive deodorizing solution.
3. A Low-Cost Alternative to Store-Bought Fridge Deodorizers
One of the primary advantages of using toilet paper as a fridge deodorizer is its cost-effectiveness. A roll of toilet paper is considerably cheaper than most commercial deodorizers, which can range from $5 to $15 per unit. For budget-conscious individuals, this hack offers a way to maintain a fresh-smelling fridge without incurring additional expenses.
Moreover, toilet paper is a common household item, readily available in most homes. This accessibility means that you can start using this hack immediately, without the need for a special trip to the store. It provides an environmentally friendly option as well, reducing the reliance on chemical-based products.
4. Reducing Moisture and Keeping Your Fridge Fresher Longer
By absorbing excess moisture, toilet paper can help keep your fridge fresher for longer periods. High humidity levels in a fridge can lead to condensation, which in turn fosters the growth of mold and bacteria. These microorganisms can spoil food faster and contribute to a less hygienic environment.
Using toilet paper as a moisture absorber can help mitigate these issues. It acts as a barrier against excess humidity, creating a drier and more stable environment inside the fridge. This not only prolongs the shelf life of your groceries but also reduces the frequency of deep cleaning required to maintain hygiene.
5. When This Hack Works Best—And When It Doesn’t
The toilet paper in the fridge hack works best in fridges that experience moderate humidity levels and minor odor issues. It is ideal for households that store a variety of foods with differing odor profiles, as it can help neutralize light to moderate odors without additional interventions.
However, this hack may not be as effective in cases of severe odor problems or extremely high humidity. In such instances, more robust solutions like activated charcoal or baking soda may be necessary. Additionally, if your fridge has major odor issues due to spoiled food or mold, it is crucial to address these underlying problems first before relying on toilet paper as a solution.
6. How to Properly Store a Roll of Toilet Paper in the Fridge
To maximize the effectiveness of this hack, it’s important to store the toilet paper correctly. Place the roll in an area of the fridge where it won’t get wet, such as a side shelf or the top shelf away from spills or condensation drips. Avoid placing it too close to the back of the fridge where it might freeze.
Ensure the roll is upright and stable to prevent it from unraveling or becoming squished. Keeping the roll in its original packaging or placing it in a small container can provide additional protection from moisture while still allowing it to perform its absorbent function.
7. How Long to Keep It In Before You Need to Replace It
The longevity of a roll of toilet paper in your fridge will depend on the specific conditions of your appliance, such as humidity levels and odor intensity. Generally, a roll should be replaced every 3 to 4 weeks to maintain its effectiveness. If you notice the toilet paper becoming damp or the return of unwanted odors, it may be time for a replacement.
Regularly monitoring the condition of the roll is key. If the paper feels moist to the touch or begins to develop a musty smell, it’s a good indication that it has reached its absorption capacity and needs to be swapped out for a fresh roll.
8. Safety and Hygiene Tips You Shouldn’t Skip
When using toilet paper in the fridge, it’s essential to follow some basic safety and hygiene guidelines. Ensure that the roll does not come into direct contact with food items to prevent contamination. If using an opened roll, make sure it is clean and free of any contaminants before placing it in the fridge.
Additionally, check the roll periodically for signs of mold or mildew, especially in high-humidity environments. If any signs of fungal growth appear, discard the roll immediately and replace it with a new one. Maintaining overall cleanliness in your fridge will further enhance the effectiveness of this hack.
9. Other Clever Household Uses for Toilet Paper in the Kitchen
Toilet paper can serve multiple purposes in the kitchen beyond the fridge hack. It can be used as a temporary filter for straining liquids when you’re out of coffee filters or cheesecloth. Additionally, toilet paper can be used to blot excess oil from fried foods or to clean up small spills quickly.
For those without access to traditional napkins or paper towels, toilet paper can act as an emergency substitute. Its versatility makes it a handy tool to have on hand for various kitchen tasks, providing utility beyond its primary function.
10. What Experts Say About This Viral Fridge Hack
Experts have mixed opinions about the toilet paper in the fridge hack. Some home economists and appliance specialists acknowledge its potential in reducing minor odors and moisture, but they emphasize that it should not replace regular cleaning and maintenance of the fridge.
While it can be a useful supplemental measure, experts recommend using it in conjunction with other methods for best results. Ultimately, the effectiveness of this hack will depend on individual fridge conditions and the specific needs of the user. As with any home remedy, it’s important to evaluate its practicality and effectiveness on a case-by-case basis.
11. Common Myths and Misconceptions About This Trend
A common misconception about the toilet paper fridge hack is that it can completely eliminate all odors, regardless of their intensity or cause. In reality, while toilet paper can help reduce mild odors, it is not a substitute for thorough cleaning and removal of spoiled food.
Another myth is that the hack will work in all types of fridges and environments. Factors such as fridge design, temperature settings, and the variety of foods stored can influence its effectiveness. Understanding these limitations is crucial for setting realistic expectations and achieving the desired results.

Harvesting and Selecting Acorns
The first step in utilizing acorns is gathering them, a task best undertaken in the early autumn when they are ripe and plentiful. Look for acorns that are firm, without any holes or cracks, as these imperfections may indicate the presence of insects or rot. Green acorns are immature and should be left to ripen, while those that are brown and detach easily from their caps are ready for use. It’s a sustainable practice to gather from the ground, leaving enough acorns for wildlife and the regeneration of the oak forest.
Processing Acorns to Remove Tannins
Shelling: Begin by removing the acorns from their shells. This can be done manually or with the aid of a nutcracker. It’s a labor-intensive step but crucial for accessing the nut meat within.
Leaching Out the Tannins: The most critical step in making acorns edible is leaching out the tannins, which are compounds that give raw acorns their bitter taste and can be harmful in large quantities. There are two primary methods for leaching: cold and hot leaching.
Cold Leaching: This method involves soaking the shelled acorns in cold water. The water should be changed when it becomes discolored, approximately every 12 to 24 hours, until the water remains clear, indicating that the tannins have been removed. This process can take several days to a week, depending on the acorn variety.
Hot Leaching: Hot leaching is faster than cold leaching but requires more active management. Boil the acorns in water, and change the water when it turns dark, repeating this process until the water remains mostly clear. This method can remove the tannins in a matter of hours.
Drying: After leaching, the acorns need to be dried to prevent mold and prepare them for grinding. Spread the acorns on a baking sheet and dry them in an oven at a low temperature, in a dehydrator, or air-dry them in a sunny, well-ventilated area.
Making Acorn Flour
Once dried, the acorns can be ground into flour using a food processor, blender, or hand grinder. The resulting flour should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place or frozen for extended storage. Acorn flour can be used as a substitute for traditional flours in baking, offering a nutty flavor and nutritional boost to bread, pancakes, and other baked goods.
Incorporating acorns into our diets is a journey back to the roots of human sustenance, a nod to the wisdom of our ancestors who relied on the natural world for their dietary needs. This journey is not just about adding a new ingredient to our pantry but about embracing a deeper connection with nature, understanding the cycles of growth and renewal, and appreciating the abundance that surrounds us. As we integrate acorns into our meals, we partake in a tradition that spans centuries and cultures, celebrating the oak tree’s gift and its enduring significance to both the environment and our health. Let the humble acorn inspire you to explore, innovate, and appreciate the simple, yet profound, pleasures of foraging and feasting from the land.
